Amboseli National Park was Kenya's first established wildlife park. Since 1948, millions of international guests have been drawn to the park by snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, with wildlife grazing under flat-topped thorn trees below. Much of Amboseli is dry and desert like. About a third of the park consists of Lake Amboseli, a seasonal soda lake that, at certain times, appears to be a dead, flat wasteland. Indeed, amboseli is Maa (the language of the Masai) for "salt dust." In dramatic contrast to these dry desert areas of Amboseli are river forests and swampy areas bright green with clumps of vegetation. In Amboseli more than in any other park of Kenya, you are certain to see elephants. Elephant herds are clearly visible across rolling grassy savannas, usually grazing their way to and from major feeding grounds or water holes.

The essence of Amboseli is Kilimanjaro Africa's highest peak which dominates everything in sight. The main attractions of the National Park are the large elephant population and the prolific birdlife. There are few trees in Amboseli and part of its attraction is the ease and certainty of game viewing, unobstructed by bush and scrub.
Ol Tukai is camouflaged in a forest of fever trees and plants. The architecture is unobtrusive with lots of wood, local stone and slate.

Tortilis Camp is an exclusive 17 tent lodge on the edge of Amboseli National Game Reserve. From your tent you  can see miles across the plains of Amboseli into Tanzania as far as Mount Kilimanjaro. The Camp is named after the local Acacia Tortilis and is set in one of Amboseli's few remaining areas of unspoiled  woodland. The camp is managed as a conservation project. By landscaping to regenerate stocks of indigenous trees the

project has already begun to attract small animals and birdlife back to its woodlands. A fee is paid to the local Maasai for each overnight guest in order to assure that the local community benefits from tourism.

Accommodation: Each luxurious tent is screened from its neighbors by trees and shrubs. After game drives you can laze by the pool before enjoying a delicious dinner. The chef's specialty is home-style Italian cooking featuring fresh herbs and vegetables grown on the premises. To work up an appetite, you can enjoy a game walk, escorted by a Maasai guide.
