STT I012: Israel Explorer (10 days)
Day 1: Arrival at Ben Gurion Airport, where you are met and assisted
through customs and transferred to your hotel in Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean
Sea.
Day 2: Tel Aviv. Day at leisure in Tel Aviv.
Day 3: Caesarea | Megiddo | Haifa. Leave Tel Aviv and head north along the Mediterranean Sea to
Caesarea, once the Roman capital of the Holy Land. Explore its excavated Roman
harbor, the Crusader fortress and the Amphitheater, which has been restored to
its former glory and is a concert venue. Continue inland to Megiddo, one of King
Solomon’s Chariot cities, and visit the remarkable excavations and 20 layers
of civilizations. Proceed to your hotel in Haifa for overnight.
Day 4: Haifa | Safed | Golan Heights |
Tiberias. Begin your tour of Haifa with a breathtaking panoramic view of
Haifa Bay and the Western Galilee from the summit of Mt. Carmel. Visit the
golden-domed Bahai Temple and its exotic Persian gardens. Pass the city’s port and drive to
Sephoris to see the ruins and mosaic floors of this important ancient
Jewish city from Roman times. Proceed to Safed, the center of Jewish mysticism
with it’s historic synagogues and modern artists’ quarter. Continue to the
Golan Heights to see the former Syrian army bunkers, the abandoned city of
Kuneitra and the new city of Katzrin. Continue to Tiberias, a resort town on the
Sea of Galilee for overnight.
Day 5: Tiberias | Nazareth| Jordan Valley
|Jericho |
Jerusalem. Begin your day with a visit to the Church of the Annunciation
in Nazareth. Continue to Capernaum and visit the ancient synagogue. Proceed via
Beit Shean, once a major Roman city, to Beit Alpha to view the famous mosaic
floor of an ancient synagogue. Follow the Jordan Valley through Jericho, the
oldest known city in the world. Continue driving up through the Judean Hills to
Jerusalem for overnight.
Day 6: Jerusalem (Old City) - Bethlehem.
Start the day with a visit to the tomb of King David and the
Room of the Last Supper on Mount Zion. Enter the Walled city and stroll through
the restored Jewish Quarter. Visit the Roman Cardo, the Herodian Quarter and
continue to the Western Wall. walk along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre. Proceed to Mount Scopus and then to the Mount of Olives for a
magnificent panoramic view of the Old City. Continue to Bethlehem, stopping at
Rachel’s Tomb. Visit the Church of the Nativity. Return to your Jerusalem
hotel for overnight.
Day 7: Jerusalem (New City). A full day devoted to the new city starts with a drive to the
Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem to see Chagall’s fascinating
stained-glass windows. Proceed to see the famous scale model of Jerusalem as it
was during the Second Temple. Continue to Yad Vashem – The Holocaust Museum
and Memorial. Proceed to the Israel Museum and visit the Shrine of the Book,
housing the original Dead Sea Scrolls. End the day with a view of the Knesset,
Israel’s Parliament. Return to your hotel for overnight.
Day 8: Qumran Caves | Dead Sea | Massada
| Jerusalem. Drive through the moonscaped Judean Desert down to the Dead
Sea, the lowest point on earth, almost 1300 feet (400 meters) below sea level.
Stop at the Qumran Caves to visit the excavations where the Dead Sea Scrolls
were discovered. Ascend Massada by cable car, to marvel at King Herod’s desert
fortress-palace and last stronghold of the Jewish zealots against the Roman
domination in 73 CE. Time and weather permitting, there will be an opportunity
to float effortlessly on the Dead Sea itself. Drive along the Dead Sea shore to
your Jerusalem hotel for overnight.
Day 9: Jerusalem. Day at leisure in Jerusalem
Day 10: Transfer
to Ben Gurion International Airport, for your return flight.
